about our

Our Process

Rubber paving is created by combining recycled rubber crumb with proprietary binding agent according to a strict formula developed by Shercom. The Rubber Paving concept has now been expanded to include sidewalks, pathways, patios, decks, pool decks, sports courts, running tracks, pathways and trails. Rubber paving can be installed virtually anywhere and will transform your existing surface, no matter how bad it looks.

WHAT WE DO

Rubber Crumb

Rubber paving starts with a specific size of rubber crumb which is shredded recycled tires that have had all the radial metal bands removed. This rubber crumb is mixed with a specialized binder agent. This granular mix is applied to a surface, typically concrete or asphalt (but can be carefully tamped gravel mixes), in a layer of approximately one inch for driveways, sidewalks and patios. After the application, it is packed and troweled to make a firm, smooth, and uniform surface.

During the curing period the binder agent chemically fuses the individual granules of rubber crumb resulting in a continuous, flexible, rubber pavement layer (approx. ¾ of inch once packed and dry) covering the underlying surface. This rubber pavement has a hard enough surface to permit vehicle traffic and the scraping off of ice while maintaining a more textured surface that is both ice and slip resistant.

FAQs

What happens in Winter?

Snow removal is much easier with rubber paving. Rubber paving maintains a slightly porous textured surface which affords two advantages for Canada’s harsh winter snow and ice.  Firstly, water does not pool easily on the surface, reducing the thin layer of glare ice that is the cause of many falls and injuries.  Secondly, for heavier snow/ice layers the textured surface makes it easier to scrape as compared with concrete where the bottom layer of ice adheres with a ferocious tenacity. If needed it is safe to use salt or any other de-icer. We recommend using a plastic shovel and outfitting your snow blower with plastic stripping.

Can you install over gravel?

YES – rubber surfacing is typically installed over sub-surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, paving stones, or compacted granular. Some applications have varying substrate that requires proper base preparation. Typically, any solid surface is OK to surface. You don’t need to remove your old asphalt or concrete surface to apply rubber paving over, which is considered additional cost saving.

How long will it last?

Shercom has rubber surfacing installations that have been around for over 20 years, and they are still looking great. Rubber paving is a very durable product.  The first rubber paved driveway was installed by Shercom Industries in Saskatoon in 1998 and still looks as good as the day it was applied! With a little care and attention, plan on your Shercom rubber surfacing to last a very long time.

Can I use rubber surfacing for indoor flooring?

A. Yes, you can, provided you have water drain under.

Customer Reviews

Rubber Paving is excellent. I had my driveway done – 1,200 sq. ft. So glad I went this route. Easy to keep clean, Show and ice melt so fast. Neighbors can’t believe it. The only way to go.
